I made this great black and gold lace shawl eleven years ago to wear with my formal gown at the 2001 Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. It looked wonderful with my dress that night, but looks really awesome here worn by my oldest granddaugther! She wears it as a sarong, and the picture barely does it justice. She looked fabulous in it!

The girls and I got out my scarves and had a photo shoot while we played dress-up. This shawl was given to me from my mother after her trip to Spain a few years ago. It's very beautiful, and it looks great on my granddaughter! She wears it as a dress with a fringed bodice. Isn't she gorgeous?
This dress got posted a day late. I was not only sick, but also had a final project due for my college class on the 20th. So between sleeping and cramming, nothing got done on this site. But today I feel better and my project's turned in, so I'm free to get caught up! This Hubble photo of a supernova reminded me very much of the Guardian of Forever in the Star Trek:TOS series. I superimposed the shadowy figure of this Victorian lady on the photo, making it look like she can be glimpsed as you look into the Guardian's shifting images of time. I call this creation "Glimpse into the Past," which is fitting since the supernova itself exploded centuries ago and is only now able to be seen by our Hubble telescope. It almost looks like we're catching the lady in a contemplative moment here; as if she might turn her head at any second and notice our regard through the portal across time. I wonder what she'd think of us? As always with these prints, feel free to download or print it off for yourself. Just don't sell it, because I don't own the copyrights for the Hubble shot.
This tiny model doll had a pink streak in her hair already, so I decided to dress her in a pink rose outfit. The small petals from the center of the rose were used for her cap. I've had so much fun making these flower fairies that it's sad I don't have any more. But I'll be happy to show off these pretties in my room for years to come. One thing I've really enjoyed about this challenge is all the lovely art I've created since I began. And tomorrow has all new dress design possibilities in it!
My granddaughters and I are cheese-meisters. We seriously love cheese. So was my daughter until she found out a lot of her stomach troubles came from eating dairy. So now the times that the rest of us get cheese are very few and far between. But when we do -- yum, yum! This sweet golden mini dress was designed from a slice of cheese just before that slice was consumed by me. I would love to have a dress like this one. I'd wear it with leggings and a really fun scarf. And I'd have a tasty snack with me wherever I went! *grin*
Sometimes a dress project takes longer than expected and doesn't get completed in one day. When that happens, I find myself scrambling to come up with a design idea late in the evening. It's a good thing there's always food around. When I'm completely swamped and focused on a project that won't get finished in time, I go play with food. I can't tell you how liberating that is. I never played with my food before this challenge. Now it seems like I'm doing it all the time. Woo-hoo! Having fun here!!! Here's the thing. I've never liked blueberries. I always thought they were rather tasteless. But a year ago my daughter started telling me how good they were for you and urging me to try them whenever she had fresh ones. So reluctantly I did, and although the fresh ones do have a bit more flavor, I still wasn't sold on them. But now that we live together in the same house, there seem to be blueberries quite often for us to eat. And I've stopped grumbling about them and just eat them. Not a lot. But enough so that maybe they're doing me some good. Who knows? In the meantime, they do make a gorgeous evening gown. Don't you think?
Unlike 60% of the world, blue isn't my favorite color. However, when I found this lovely blue wild rose in my flower bin, I could see it as a fairy dress for a pretty blonde. To add a touch of punk to her outfit, I added blue streaks to her hair. As with the others, she wears a matching necklace and little flower cap. I only have one of these tiny 6" dolls left. I wonder what kind of flower fairy she will become?
Yes, we had burgers and fries for supper! And there were actually some french fries leftover, so I got an idea. *grin* I really like the style of this dress. The full flirty skirt would look very good on me. I also like the trim bodice with the bell sleeves. The only problem I have with this dress is the color. I don't look very good in that shade of yellow. Maybe if I had made this dress out of sweet potato fries instead? I think a rusty orange would be just the right color for me!
Moira gave me the idea to do a dress from all my rings, since she knows me well and knows I have quite a collection of them! This long-sleeved full skirted dress is the result. I used nearly every ring in my collection for this dress, so if you take the time to count them you'll know about how many rings I own. Or you can save yourself the trouble and just accept that it's a lot! *grin* The slight blurriness of the bodice area is because I took this shot from a slightly foreshortened view so that you could see the rings. If I'd taken it straight downward, all you would have seen would be the circles, not the pretty stones.
As a fan of Cicely Mary Barker, I have to admit that I love flower fairies! And my favorite flower of all time is the wildflower known as the black-eyed susan. Like its cousin the daisy, it's a friendly flower, cheerful and bright. But I love the golden petals and the fuzzy brown centers of the black-eyed susan more than the pale daisy colors. This adorable fairy wears a top of the wildflower's leaves and a skirt made from its petals. On her head she wears a cute cap of petals from a smaller flower complete with a fuzzy brown center.
I wish I had taken this challenge years ago! I have gained so much confidence and ideas simply by setting my heart to do it. How I wish I'd done it sooner! Well. At least I'm on my way now. There's no turning back! Woo-hoo! |
Denise FeltI took this challenge in the hopes of expanding my creativity as an artist. Already I'm seeing art in a new light -- as something to do for fun and not just practicality! Archives
