I took the picture for this 4 x 4" tile a little farther away, because if you're too close to it you can't see the dress for all the color. Made of eggshell mosaic, this strapless gown with snug bodice flares into a full billowing skirt at the hip. and was painted with alcohol inks and given silver fairy wings to complete the fantasy. My heart resonates with this piece because all the elements of it -- the colorful gown, the delicate wings, the admonishment to dream -- take me back to my childhood where good dreams were hard to come by and very precious. Would I wear this dress? In a heartbeat! And I'd make sure the wings were nice and shiny too. If I didn't have anywhere to wear it, I'd have to throw a party myself! *grin*

Leafing through my book of Leonardo da Vinci's artwork, I came across this sketch he did of a flying machine. It looked so steampunk that I had to design a gown around it! I used a classic design for the dress, with a full skirt and sleeves to include the entire drawing. A stylized hem at the bottom of the skirt and sleeves adds a bit more glamour. What a great collaboration between the master visionary and my humble self! How much fun it would be to wear this gown to an event! Add an aviator cap and goggles and you'd be good to go!
I love how other artists can inspire your own creations. All my life I have seen famous paintings as fabric for gorgeous gowns and dresses, but never knew what to do with those visions. This challenge has allowed me to actually put my visions on paper for the first time, and I'm so excited to see them for real! I found some great felt cutouts at Hobby Lobby the other day, so I bought them so I could play. The dress needed serious editing, but the butterfly wings were great once I cut off the butterfly body. With the remnant of the pieces I was able to make everything else, including the pretty goth crown. I added a silver sash at the waist and a rhinestone to the crown, and it was done! This gorgeous tile is larger than the other ones I've worked with so far. It's 10 x 10 inches. Next time I'm at the store I'll pick up a plate hanger so I can hang this dress on my wall. It really puts me in the mood for goth!
Yes, I have fairies on the brain! This is the second tile in my fairy tile series. Once more, it has been done on a 4 x 4" tile. This one is a lovely brown marble. Remember the peppers from our pizza the other day? This dress is made from the seeds from those peppers. (The seeds didn't photograph well. They look slightly green here, but are actually a pretty, pale tan.) The trim on the dress is done in bronze metallic paint, as are the fairy wings. I hope to eventually have enough of these tiles to make a wall collage. Since my room is decorated in fairies, they'll fit right in!
When I was a girl, these tiny 6" dolls were sold wearing high fashion outfits. I can't even remember what the name of the brand was now, but each doll had a name. Finding the dolls years later at a yard sale was such a delight for me! I had to have them and hold onto them, because they're the perfect size for fairies. I made this one into a tiger lily fairy, cutting her long hair into a manageable crop and giving her a cute blossom hat. She has a pretty bronze bead necklace, but no shoes. Fairies don't wear shoes! *grin* Didn't she turn out lovely?
Guess what we had for lunch today? Homemade pizza! And as the one whose job it was to cut up the bell peppers for the topping, I got to play with the leftover pieces that wouldn't fit on the pizza. And not only me! My granddaughters also wanted to make pepper dresses and had a great time with the slices before Nana put them away for use another day. Isn't this just the sassiest dress?
It constantly amazes me how two (or three!) people can take the same ingredients and come up with a style that is uniquely them and no one else's. Having my little girls creating right alongside me reminds me of this over and over again. No one else sees the world as I do -- and that's the way it should be! I think Hubble is one of the greatest inventions ever! How wonderful it is to see the galaxies and stars in all their beauty, not limited by the dull layer of Earth's atmosphere! Last week I spent some time at http://hubblesite.org/gallery/ just enjoying the view. While there I found this gorgeous nebula and knew I'd have to make a dress out of it. It's a bit blurry because I didn't have a high-resolution photo to download from the site, but it still comes across quite beautifully for all that. I love how the wash of color echos the ruffles of the skirt and the way that one lone white star lays like a necklace pendant at the throat. Wouldn't it be fabulous to wear this gown to a big event?
Once more my granddaughter did it first. She made a very cute dress out of our Disney Princess playing cards, then challenged me to do the same. I really like the sweet chic of this design. It's slightly reminiscent of Aurora's
gown, except without sleeves. I'm sure any Disney Princess would be happy to wear this ballgown. It's not quite as glamorous as Cinderella's ballgown, but remember she had help from a fairy godmother! I have been overjoyed to see how my granddaughter has taken to making her own dress designs each day! She's very creative, and it's so much more fun to have a pal to share ideas with on this challenge. She may tire of it soon and go onto other things, but for now Nana is happy to have my little helper to encourage me! Wow, this dress was fun to do! But talk about hard work! It took nearly two days of research and working with my different programs to get this puzzle complete. But I'm very happy with how it turned out and hope you have fun solving it! The dress itself is a really elegant style for evening wear. I show it in the puzzle on a dress form. It makes a striking silhouette, doesn't it?
I decided to make a New Year's resolution this year: be more creative! Well, of course I had to show it in a dress! This sassy dress would be such fun to wear -- and in such a great pink too! I've always wanted a dress with writing on it, and I really like this saying! What do you think? Would it look cute on me?
I don't normally make New Year's resolutions, mostly because they're forgotten by February. But this year's won't be! I am enjoying stretching myself as an artist in this challenge so much that I can't help but be more creative! It's wonderful and something good to look forward to in the new year! |
Denise FeltI took this challenge in the hopes of expanding my creativity as an artist. Already I'm seeing art in a new light -- as something to do for fun and not just practicality! Archives
