Still at Susan's today, I didn't have access to my workroom. But I did have my laptop! I chose three dresses from my past Fashion Show collections to display, although the first one (my black and white daydress) isn't seen, because I cut Gerri off at the neckline. The middle dress was from this year's show, but the other two were from the 2009 Spring Collection. I really liked the overall effect of the composition. My model Rebekah is almost unrecognizable, since you only see her torso and hair, but Gerri looks adorable!

Today we spent at Susan's in Nauvoo after last night at the Pumpkin Walk. She had a lovely tray of polished rocks on her coffee table, and I couldn't leave them alone! Such wonderful stones! This gorgeous dress would weigh too much to wear if made in my size, but it would certainly look great on!
I'm very excited about creating another non-permanent piece of artwork. True, I am keeping documentation of it by taking a photo for the website, but even so, this is not something I would ever allow myself to do before. I feel as though I'm breaking new ground -- not just artistically, but in every way! Today my granddaughters and I went to the public library for their Crafternoon, a time when they put out all the leftover craft pieces from the year and let the patrons create whatever they want. The girls made fabulous collages, and I made a little witch in honor of Halloween coming up in a few days. Black construction paper made the bookmark, dress, boots, and hat. Orange paper made the backdrop, and peach made her skin. Bright green crinkle tissue was perfect for her hair, and it was more fun for me to make her without using scissors. Once I got her home, I added the orange ribbon, the orange buttons, and the red and white striped tights. The final touch was the white painted 'boo!'
I held off making a fairy dress until now, because I didn't want the challenge to include only fairy dresses! Fairies are an obsession of mine, and they could easily overwhelm this challenge if I let them. But I want to leave my options wide open each day and not restrict them.
I was lucky enough to have gold, silver, and copper specialty papers in my scrapbooking bin, along with some gold doily hearts for Valentine's that never got used. They made great wings for this 8 x 10 picture! Some beautiful bronze chiffon for the skirt and a touch of gold glitter paint for the necklace completed my metallic fairy costume. Won't she shine! I wanted to do a photo montage today, so I chose my favorite dress from my 2011 Spring Collection and created a collage using my Fireworks program. Rebekah was one of my favorite models for the show and gave me so many great shots of the dress from which to choose.
Since photography is a field I'm very much at home in, I've set myself a few limits in this challenge. Otherwise I'd be tempted to do a photo every day. The first limit is that if I use a photo of a dress, it has to be one of my own designs. The second limit is that I cannot use a photo without altering it in some way, unless the design is a new one created for next year's show. I woke this morning with the idea of a dress made from fruit full-blown in my mind. So I had to try it! The dress ended up even more fun and delightful than I had imagined. No fruit was harmed in the process of making this dress -- except the apple (which I ate.) *grin*
I'm proud of myself for being willing to create something non-permanent. This is new for me, and I hope it helps to silence that ultra-practical voice in my head that always demands that things I make have a purpose! I spent the afternoon playing with my granddaughters in our driveway making chalk pictures. A chalk dress was almost too easy, but I felt it made for a stress-free first day's work. I didn't want to do something so major to start or I'd have to spend all my time trying to top it in future. And this is supposed to be fun!
I used bright turquoise blue for the dress, since I love this color and never wear it. It turned out so pretty I wish I could! |
Denise FeltI took this challenge in the hopes of expanding my creativity as an artist. Already I'm seeing art in a new light -- as something to do for fun and not just practicality! Archives
