Some days I don't have an idea to save my life. On those days I'm so grateful for the ideas of my friends and family! Thanks, Elise, for giving me this fun dress idea!
We got these fun candy-filled cupcakes for the girls for Easter. They have yummy treats inside each plastic cupcake. I thought the swirls of the tops were great! Elise suggested we make dresses from them -- so we did! Mine was a sheath dress that's very figure flattering. I love polka dots, but these might be a bit large for me. However, it's a fun dress and full of cool textures with the swirls in the dots. Maybe it's the fact that they're all pastels that is throwing me off. I don't know if I'd mind the size of the dots so much if the colors were jewel tones and black. But the girls thought they were perfect!

This dress was created from a shawl and a mantilla and is modeled by my oldest granddaughter. Even though the shawl and the mantilla were already both black, I felt this shot needed to be shown in black and white to give the best effect to the mood. I blurred out the background and upped the contrast in the foreground. She looks quite dramatic, doesn't she, my little Spanish senorita?
I played around with the abstract dress arrangement today and created a more closeup view of the dress. I like this view better because it shows more dimension to the room than the first view did. I like the immediacy this view brings to the design. What do you think? Better than the other? Or worse?
The girls opened their Easter baskets while we had company over, so together Moira and I made today's dress from the Easter grass in their baskets. We decided on a strapless bustier style mini dress to really give that bright pink a punch. Worn with cool tights, hip boots, and funky jewelry, this simple design would really come to life. I don't know offhand of a fabric to duplicate that great texture, but maybe you could super crinkle some cotton or silk. It'd be fun to play around until you got just the right feel of crazy-but-cool, wouldn't it? Thanks, Moira, for your help with this dress!
There's such a crisp spring feel to this dress! The style screams sixties to me, when abstract art ran rampant throughout a home's decor. There's a very Piet Mondrian feel to this dress, almost as if it were a canvas for his artwork. I would so enjoy wearing this dress to go shopping or even to church. I'd wear it out to lunch, but only if I was sure I wouldn't spill anything on all that white! *grin* Where would you wear such a pretty dress?
I had fun playing around in Photoshop tonight and came up with this fun abstract picture. It could use some tweaking and some more textures added, but I think it's really cute as is for now. Being an eighties girl at heart, red and black are two of my favorite colors, so you shouldn't even need to ask to know that I'd wear this abstract dress. After all, in the eighties we all wore big shoulders!
I intend to keep playing with this design and will add the new versions to show you what I've come up with. I love having fun! My favorite ice cream flavor is Spumoni. A friend introduced me to it many years ago, and I have been loyal ever since. It's not an easy flavor to find, but Prairie Farms does one that is pretty good. I'm sure a gourmet ice cream shop would carry the real thing, which is chocolate ice cream with chocolate chunks, pistachio ice cream with chopped nuts, and cherry ice cream with cherry pieces. The idea of an ice cream dress came from my youngest granddaughter, who thought it would be awesome. Her older sister told her it would be messy. They were both right! This delicious dress is both awesome and messy! *grin* Notice the pretty pecan chip buttons on the bodice and the chocolate syrup trim at the hemline. I love the colors of this spring dress and would love to wear it done up in linen or silk. Totally yummy! Thanks, Anna!
Easter's coming! Easter's coming! And my favorite Easter candy are those wonderful little Robin's Eggs! I still remember how happy I was to find out that you could still buy Whoppers after Easter. (They just weren't made into Robin's Eggs the rest of the year.) I loved those yummy treats! Today the girls and I went shopping and bought ourselves some Easter candy. So of course when we got home we had to eat some and make dresses from them! *grin* I chose a crisp spring dress with a white linen bodice and lovely robin's egg blue skirt. Cap sleeves to ward off any slight chill in the air and a blousey bodice that tucks into the high empire waist of the A-line skirt. Looking at this dress makes me want to make my own Easter dress this year. Oh, my! As if I'm not busy enough!
The painting that underlies this lady in black is "Farewell to Anger" by Belorussian artist Leonid Afremov. This is one of my favorite female silhouettes because of how much fun she's obviously having in her party dress. And when I saw this painting this week in class it struck me the same way. Someone was really enjoying their life instead of grumbling. Well, you tend to be happier when you forgive (as the title of the painting suggests.) I thought the two designs together -- the silhouette and the painting -- made a great statement together. Enjoy life! Feel free to print out this design or save it as a background for your desktop. Just remember that I own no copyrights to Afremov's painting and have no permission to copy his painting for commercial use.
For April Fools' I thought I'd do a mutant dress right out of vintage sci-fi: a triffid from the movie of the same name. It turned out pretty well, considering I used a pineapple top for the skirt, two baby oranges for the bodice, and empty grape stems for the straps. I edited the photo by tinting it an unearthly green, but I have to admit that I don't think I would wear this dress. The color's rather cool, but I don't think the style is quite me. *grin*
BTW, if you've never had the experience of watching "The Day of the Triffids," you've missed a really wild time! It terrified me as a kid so much that I was afraid to go to sleep that night. It might seem a bit campy and dated by today's standards, but if you give it the chance, it might make you shiver too! |
